Singapore & Hong Kong ban the sale of giant indian spice brands Everest, MDH
The sale of well-known Indian spice brands, Everest Food Products Pvt and MDH Pvt, has been banned in Hong Kong, following Singapore, on the grounds that carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide has been detected in several of the businesses’ spice blends.
Similar action was taken by Singapore last week, claiming that tests on samples of Everest spices revealed levels of ethylene oxide beyond allowable limits.
Three MDH Group spice mixes—Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala Powder, and Curry Powder—were found to contain ethylene oxide during normal monitoring programs, according to the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Centre For Food Safety.
