Bengaluru residents to pay reduced electricity bill in September. Here’s why
The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) will charge the Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) for consumers at Rs 1.15 per unit for the billing cycle of September, a 90-paise drop from the previous month’s rate of Rs 2.05 per unit.
The reduction is expected to bring relief to people and can be attributed to a decrease in buying power prices.
Notably, beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi scheme (that offers up to 200 units of free electricity for households) will have their FPPCA charges covered by the government, alleviating the financial burden on certain consumers.
The development came following a June decision by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) granting Bescom the authority to recover 51 paise per unit for the billing quarter spanning July to September, and 50 paise per unit for the subsequent October to December quarter.
Bescom had previously calculated varying FPPCA charges of 27 paise per unit for April, 9 paise per unit for June and 28 paise per unit for July, reflecting the fluctuations in fuel and power purchase costs.
Consequently, consumers will observe a 115-paise (Rs 1.15) per unit FPPCA charge on their August consumption, as this reduction will be reflected in their September bills. The bills will show a reduced FPPCA rate of Rs 1.15 per unit, down from the previous Rs 2.05 per unit.
“Fuel adjustment charges underwent changes following a new regulation by the Ministry of Power last December. Instead of quarterly calculations, these charges are now assessed monthly under the FPPCA charge effective since March. The previous month’s rate of Rs 2.05 per unit included charges from the third quarter of last year,” said Bescom Managing Director Anand Bilagi.
“We approached the KERC in June, leading to the adjustment of these charges for six months, with 50 paise for the first three months and 51 paise for the following three months. The current Rs 1.15 per unit includes the 50 paise component. The actual calculation for FPPCA this month stands at 65 paise, demonstrating a significant reduction compared to the previous month,” Bilagi added.
However, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya slammed the Congress government over the power tariff revision.
