Kerala soon to be renamed to Keralam?
Following minor revisions recommended by the union home ministry, the Kerala state legislature overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Monday, repeating its request to the federal government for a constitutional amendment changing the state’s name from Kerala to Keralaam.
Under Article 3 of the Constitution, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced the resolution. He emphasized the historical importance of the Malayalam word “Keralam” and its connection to the unity of Malayalam-speaking communities since India’s freedom fight.
The First Schedule of the Constitution lists Kerala as the name of our state. This Assembly calls on the Center to act promptly to rename it as “Keralam” in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution and to change its name to that of “Keralam” in each of the eight languages listed in the Eighth Schedule.
