Vijaya Medical & Educational Trust

Fundamental changes are needed in an organization for delivery of healthcare across the length and breadth of our country. Also due to the waves of uncertainty which came along with the pandemic, only top quality healthcare facilities continued to strive on the journey of imparting quality physical and emotional care. In this pursuit, Vijaya Medical & Educational Trust stood out as a clear example of excellence, progressing on dynamic upgrades fulfilling each of their patients’ needs.

Envisioning towards delivering quality healthcare at affordable prices, coupled with unrelenting commitment towards clinical excellence, Vijaya Medical & Educational Trust since its inception is focused towards treating all its patients with unparalleled skill and compassion. Established in 1972, a vital constituent of VMET – Vijaya Hospital has been providing quality medical service to the community, which was founded by Shri. B. Nagi Reddi, a recipient of Dada Saheb Phalke award and founder of Vijaya Vauhini Studios, one of the most reputed film studios in the country.

Starting off as the first multispecialty hospital in Chennai with an initial bed strength of 50, it has since evolved into a 750 bedded institution with all the specialties, state of the art laboratories, diagnostic facilities, 24/7 emergency and critical care services under the banner of Vijaya Medical & Educational Trust (VMET). Today, the Trust encompasses Vijaya Hospital (VH), Vijaya Health Centre (VHC), Vijaya Heart Foundation (VHF), Vijaya Eye Foundation, Vijaya Institute of Trauma & Orthopaedics (VITO), Vijaya College of Nursing and Vijaya Educational Academy (VEA).

Thereby, to help our readers understand in depth the working ethos present at VMET and to understand what lies ahead for VMET, we interviewed the management trustee – Smt. B.Bharathi Reddy.

  • Why Vijaya Hospital?

Being the flagship hospital of the Vijaya Medical and Educational Trust, through this hospital we provide multi-speciality tertiary care services such as Cardiology, General Surgery, ENT, Gastroenterology , Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Urology, Physiotherapy, Neurology and many more. And the main reason our Hospital Stands out is because we use only the latest medical, surgical equipment. While providing specialty services that are constantly being upgraded to keep up with the latest developments in medical care.

VMET has National Board of Examinations approved courses since 1990 and currently we are running 10 DNB specialities. We have regular scientific sessions every month and have also been active in hosting and conducting National and International conferences within our spacious premises.

  • How was the pandemic handled?

Just like any other medical facility we too had to rapidly expand our covid bed strength from 15 beds to 170 beds within 2 weeks, given the rapid surge during the second wave. Furthermore, we set up a 24/7 fever clinic and a covid command center to cater to the needs of the continuous influx of patients and to serve the patients coming for admission and treatment, given the critical demand for ICU and ward beds.

We also collaborated with NOKIA-WISH FOUNDATION and initiated a CSR project by installing two oxygen PSA plants, and a covid ICU with state of the art infrastructure. We not only became self-sufficient with oxygen resources but were also able to provide ICU care for the public at much subsidized costs, true to our founder’s vision!

  • Specialties, Super-Specialties and Services

Anaesthesiology, Cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dermatology, Dentistry, ENT, Endocrinology & Diabetology, Emergency Medicine, Gastroenterology are a few among a long list of specialties and super-specialties offered at our facility.

Coming to the services part VMET is proud of being an all-rounded facility, where patients can get the best of everything and don’t have to venture out for any purpose – all under one roof.. Thus, to enable such an inclusive system we have onboard Blood Bank, Lab Services, CATH Lab, Mother’s Milk Bank, Foot Clinic, Fever Clinic, a wellness center called Vishwas, Adult Vaccination Clinic and so on.

  • Importance Laid on Research

We have an established institutional scientific research committee headed by medical experts who look into and analyze the research topics brought in by our consultants and post graduation students, and pass them on to the Ethics approval committee headed by a team of professionals to assess the ethical feasibility of the study before giving a final nod. We encourage both clinical and non clinical research and VMET is known for highly skilled professionals who come up with regular publications both at national and international level.

VMET also has a Vijaya Educational Academy, established in 2011 catering to the needs of Allied Health Services professionals and runs courses in Cardiac Technology, Radiology Technology, Physician Assistant to name a few. We also have the Vijaya college of nursing, admitting 100 students every year in BSc nursing.

  • A Healthy Doctor = A Better Performing Doctor

The management of VMET firmly believes that “a healthy employee is a productive employee” and we give a lot of impetus to mental health. We have a dedicated team of psychologists on site who are constantly engaging with our employees based on need, and are also creating a mental health ecosystem by raising awareness. Every year in October, the management ensures the mental health awareness week is celebrated by involving the public and our employees in awareness programmes and other fun filled activities to facilitate positive attitude at the workplace. We have the POSH (prevention of sexual harassment at work) committee headed by a multi disciplinary team to address any such major concerns, to reassure our women employees.
